Understanding car service cost can help UK drivers budget for routine maintenance and avoid comparing garages on price alone. The amount you pay can vary significantly depending on the vehicle, service level, parts required, labour rates and where the work is carried out.

An interim service will normally involve less work than a full or major service, while additional maintenance identified during an inspection can increase the final bill. Therefore, the cheapest advertised package is not necessarily the best value. The important question is whether you are getting the right service for your vehicle at a transparent and reasonable price.

What Is the Average Car Service Cost in the UK?

There is no single price that applies to every car service. Recent RAC data gives an indicative average quoted price of £298.60 for a full car service, based on mobile mechanic quotes collected between September and November 2025. The figures included parts, labour and VAT for a standard service, but RAC notes that actual costs can vary according to location, vehicle age, engine size and other factors.

Individual vehicle makes in the same RAC data also showed differences. For example, quoted averages ranged from around £277 for Ford vehicles to more than £327 for Land Rover vehicles. These figures should therefore be treated as a guide rather than a fixed UK price.

For a current statutory comparison, the maximum MOT test fee for a standard car is £54.85. However, an MOT is separate from servicing, so it should not be confused with the cost of maintaining the vehicle. GOV.UK’s MOT fee guidance confirms the current maximum test fee.

Car Service Cost by Service Type

The service level is one of the biggest factors affecting the amount you pay. Garages commonly advertise interim, full and major services, although the exact work included can differ between providers.

Interim Service Cost

An interim service is generally a lighter maintenance option. It may be suitable for vehicles that require more frequent servicing or for drivers whose manufacturer’s schedule calls for an interim service between more comprehensive appointments.

Because fewer maintenance items may be included, an interim service will usually cost less than a full or major service. However, drivers should check the manufacturer’s recommended schedule rather than choosing an interim service simply because it has the lowest price.

Full Service Cost

A full service normally involves a broader set of inspections and routine maintenance tasks than an interim service. It can include checks of fluids, brakes, tyres, battery, steering, suspension and other vehicle components, together with scheduled replacement of certain consumables.

The exact specification varies. Consequently, two garages can quote different prices for a “full service” while offering different levels of work.

As a current market reference, RAC’s recently published data puts its average quoted full-service price at £298.60, although individual vehicles and locations can differ substantially.

Major Service Cost

A major service is generally more comprehensive and may include maintenance items that are due at specific mileage or time intervals. For that reason, a major service can cost considerably more than a routine interim service.

The price can also increase if the vehicle requires scheduled replacement of additional components. Always ask the garage for a written checklist so you can see precisely what the major service includes.

What Factors Affect Car Service Cost?

Several factors influence service pricing. Understanding them makes it easier to judge whether a quotation is reasonable.

Vehicle Make and Model

Different cars require different oils, filters, components and maintenance procedures. Premium or specialist vehicles may also require more expensive parts or specialist diagnostic equipment.

Even within the same manufacturer, engine type and model year can affect the required maintenance and therefore the final price.

Service Level

The difference between an interim, full and major service can be substantial. A quotation is meaningful only when you know what level of work is included.

When comparing service pricing, make sure you compare equivalent service specifications rather than choosing the lowest headline figure.

Parts and Consumables

Oil, filters and other consumables form part of many routine services. The type and quantity required will depend on the vehicle.

Some garages may also offer different parts options. Ask what is included in the quotation and whether the price covers the parts specified for your vehicle.

Labour Rates

Garage labour rates vary by business, location and level of expertise. A specialist or manufacturer-focused workshop may have different labour charges from an independent garage.

A higher labour rate does not automatically mean poor value. If a particular repair requires specialist knowledge or equipment, paying for appropriate expertise can be more sensible than selecting a provider based solely on price.

Vehicle Condition

A routine service may uncover worn or damaged components that require attention. Repairs identified during servicing are usually separate from the basic service price unless the package specifically states otherwise.

This is why an advertised service price should be regarded as the cost of the scheduled service, rather than a guarantee of the total amount you will spend on the vehicle.

How to Compare Full Service Cost

When comparing a full service cost, ask each garage for details of the work included. A useful comparison should cover:

  • Service level and inspection checklist.
  • Engine oil specification and quantity.
  • Filters included in the package.
  • Labour charges.
  • VAT where applicable.
  • Diagnostic checks, if included.
  • Any additional scheduled maintenance.
  • How additional repairs are authorised.

This approach prevents a low advertised price from becoming misleading once essential items are added.

How to Find Affordable Servicing Without Cutting Corners

Affordable servicing does not have to mean choosing the cheapest available garage. Instead, focus on value servicing: appropriate maintenance, clear pricing and competent workmanship at a reasonable overall cost.

Start by checking what your vehicle actually needs. If the manufacturer’s schedule calls for a major service, booking a cheaper interim package may simply delay maintenance that will still need to be completed later.

Next, compare several like-for-like quotations. Ask each provider to explain what is included and whether there are any likely additional charges.

You can also consider independent garages alongside manufacturer dealerships. The right choice depends on the vehicle and the type of work required.

Should You Choose a Cheap Car Service?

A very low advertised price can be attractive, particularly when household budgets are under pressure. However, the cheapest package may not provide the same level of maintenance as a more comprehensive service.

Check the service checklist before booking. If one garage charges significantly less than another, find out whether the difference comes from fewer checks, different parts, excluded consumables or lower labour charges.

Good value means understanding what you are paying for. A transparent garage should be able to explain the price without relying on vague descriptions.

Can an MOT and Service Save Money?

Some garages offer combined MOT and service packages. Booking both together can be convenient, particularly when the MOT date and scheduled service are close together.

However, an MOT and a service have different purposes. An MOT checks specific legal safety and environmental requirements, while servicing is intended to maintain the vehicle. Combining them does not mean the MOT replaces routine maintenance.

If both are due, you can compare MOT and service packages and check whether the combined price represents genuine value for the work included.

How to Avoid Unexpected Service Bills

Ask the garage to contact you before carrying out additional repairs. This gives you an opportunity to understand the problem and compare the proposed cost if necessary.

Request an itemised invoice after the work. It should help you understand which maintenance tasks were completed and what parts or consumables were used.

It is also useful to keep your service records. A clear history can help you track previous maintenance and identify when scheduled work is approaching.

When Is a More Expensive Service Worth It?

Paying more can make sense when the additional work is actually required by your vehicle’s maintenance schedule. For example, a major service may include scheduled maintenance items that do not form part of a standard interim service.

The same principle applies to specialist vehicles. If your car requires manufacturer-specific diagnostics or specialist technical knowledge, an appropriately equipped garage may offer better value even if its hourly labour rate is higher.

The goal is not to minimise every individual bill. It is to maintain the vehicle appropriately while avoiding unnecessary work.

Questions to Ask Before Accepting a Service Quote

Before booking, ask:

  • Which service level is this quote for?
  • What exactly is included?
  • Are oil and filters included?
  • Are parts and labour included in the advertised price?
  • Is VAT included?
  • Will you contact me before additional work is carried out?
  • Are any manufacturer-specified maintenance items due?
  • Will I receive an itemised invoice?

These questions can turn a basic price comparison into a much more useful assessment of value.

Final Thoughts on Car Service Cost

Car service cost depends on much more than the number shown in an online advertisement. Service level, vehicle type, parts, labour, location and additional maintenance can all influence the final price.

Recent RAC data provides a useful market reference, with an average quoted full-service price of £298.60, but individual vehicles can vary considerably. Treat any average as an indication rather than a guaranteed price.

The best approach is to identify the service your vehicle actually needs, compare like-for-like quotations and check every package for inclusions and exclusions. That way, you can find affordable servicing without sacrificing necessary maintenance or paying for work you do not need.
