How to Prepare Your Car for a Long Road Trip: The Complete UK Checklist

A long drive should be the relaxing start of a break, not a breakdown waiting to happen. The simplest way to keep it that way is to prepare your car for a road trip before you leave: a methodical hour of checks a few days in advance will catch the small issues that turn into motorway delays, expensive callouts and ruined plans. This UK checklist covers the mechanical basics, the legal essentials and the comfort items that make hours behind the wheel far more pleasant, whether you are heading to the coast or crossing the country.

Start with Tyres: Your Only Contact with the Road

Tyres deserve first attention because they affect safety, fuel economy and comfort all at once. Check pressures when the tyres are cold and set them to the manufacturer’s figures — if you will be fully loaded with passengers and luggage, use the higher laden pressures listed in the handbook or on the door pillar sticker. Inspect the tread: the UK legal minimum is 1.6mm, but grip in heavy rain falls away well before that, so consider replacing anything close to 3mm before a long trip. Look for cuts, bulges and uneven wear, and do not forget the spare wheel or the tyre repair kit and compressor. If you are unsure what to look for, our guide to tyre services, fitting and repairs explains how professionals assess tyre condition.

Fluids, Battery and the Under-Bonnet Basics

Work through the fluids in order: engine oil on the dipstick, coolant between the minimum and maximum marks, brake fluid, power steering fluid where fitted, and screenwash topped right up — motorway spray empties a reservoir surprisingly fast. Check for drips under the car and listen for anything unusual on a short test drive. Batteries fail most often after a change in routine, so if yours is more than four or five years old, or the engine has been turning over slowly, have it tested before you go. If several items need attention at once, booking a combined check is usually cheaper than separate visits; our garage comparison guide shows how to weigh up independents, chains and main dealers.

Brakes, Lights and Wipers

Brakes should feel firm and pull the car up straight, without grinding, squealing under light pressure or vibration through the pedal. Any doubt here means a professional inspection before the trip, not after. Walk around the car and test every light: headlights on both beams, indicators, brake lights, fog lights and number plate lights — a blown bulb is a small fix at home and an unnecessary stop on the road. Wipers should clear the screen without smearing or juddering; if they leave arcs of water, replace the blades. A full once-over like this mirrors what a professional check covers, as set out in our guide to vehicle inspections and pre-purchase checks.

Electric and Hybrid Cars Need a Slightly Different List

If your road trip car is electric or hybrid, plan around charging rather than fuel. Map your charging stops in advance, favouring sites with more than one charger, and keep a sensible buffer rather than arriving everywhere on empty. Software updates should be installed before the trip, not during it, and it is worth confirming your charging cables and any apps or cards are working. Hybrids still need all the conventional checks above plus attention to their high-voltage systems at service time; our guide to hybrid servicing explains what specialists look for. Pure EVs have fewer moving parts, but their servicing still matters — see our overview of EV servicing for what a proper check includes.

Documents, Insurance and Breakdown Cover

Keep your driving licence, insurance details and breakdown cover information in the car or on your phone. Confirm your policy covers the drivers who will actually be sharing the wheel, and check whether your breakdown cover includes onward travel or a replacement vehicle — the detail that matters most when you are far from home. If the trip involves a hire car at any stage, or you are weighing up ownership costs for a new car before the holiday season, our explainer on car finance options is worth a read before you commit to anything. Driving abroad adds requirements such as a UK sticker, headlamp converters and, in some countries, emission-zone stickers, so check the rules for every country on your route.

Do not overlook the windscreen and visibility more generally. Top up the washer bottle with a proper screenwash mix rather than plain water, clean the inside of the glass to remove the film that causes glare at night, and check that your headlights are clean and correctly aimed — a boot full of luggage can tip the beam upwards. If you wear glasses for driving, pack a spare pair in the glovebox; it is a tiny thing that can save a trip.

Plan the Journey, Not Just the Car

A prepared car deserves a prepared route. Check traffic and roadworks the day before, and decide where you will stop rather than leaving breaks to chance — services on UK motorways vary enormously in quality and price. Fuel up the day before you leave so the trip does not start with a petrol station detour, and if you are travelling at peak holiday times, leaving very early or later in the evening can save hours of queuing. Share the driving if you can, agree who navigates, and download offline maps for rural stretches where the signal disappears. Allow more time than the estimate suggests: a road trip taken at an unhurried pace, with proper stops, is safer, kinder to the car and far more enjoyable for everyone in it.

Pack for Comfort and Emergencies

Finally, pack two small kits. The emergency kit: warning triangle, high-vis vest, torch, jump leads or a portable booster pack, basic tools, a first aid kit, water and a phone charger or power bank. The comfort kit: drinks, snacks, tissues, wet wipes, a rubbish bag, sunglasses and entertainment for passengers. Load heavy luggage low and secure in the boot, keep essentials within reach of the cabin, and plan a break of at least fifteen minutes every two hours. A car that has been checked, packed and planned for turns the journey itself into part of the holiday — which is exactly what a road trip should be.
